When a smooth jazz band performs, the result usually sounds a lot rougher than on CD. Digital production techniques don't get a chance to smooth things out, so that the music often sounds much more sincere. Founder and saxophonist Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra must have had that in mind when recording the twenty-sixth CD Good To Go-Go. The arrival of the new drummer Bonny B from Trinidad played a
… major role in this, because his presence made Spyro Gyra sound so powerful during live performances. With this album, Spyro Gyra goes back in part to the mid-seventies when it debuted as a fusion band, and also indicates a good direction in which smooth jazz could develop. Anyway, with Good To Go-Go, Spyro Gyra proves after more than thirty years that they are still at the top of their genre. (AD)more
