After performing John Coltrane's A Love Supreme on Footsteps Of Our Fathers (2002) and the DVD Coltrane's A Love Supreme Live In Amsterdam, his sound continues to float around unconditionally in the work of saxophonist Branford Marsalis. After taking it easy with Eternal (2004), a CD full of jazz ballads, it is time again for heavier work with Braggtown. In doing so, he works a lot more thoroughly
… than most musicians who try to revive the sound of Coltrane by not only using his scales, but also using the characteristic blues licks that Coltrane would have played. The level of his regular band consisting of pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts seems to grow with every CD and sounds closer and more explosive. With Braggtown, Marsalis once again surpasses itself. (AD)more
