For Overtime bassist Dave Holland formed a big band that consisted of musicians with whom he had previously played in his quintets and quartets. We find Chris Potter (tenor sax), Robin Eubanks (trombone), Steve Nelson (vibraphone), Antonio Hart (alto sax) and Duane Eubanks (trumpet) among others in the line-up. The music is centered around the four-part Monterey Suite, which was first played at the
… 2001 Monterey Jazz Festival. Overtime shows Holland as a brilliant arranger. At all times he keeps the strings firmly in his hands and leads the big band with bravado through the complicated pattern of his arrangements and lets the band move from funk to latin, hip-hop and swing. Robin Eubanks plays the lead role that is reserved for him with verve. (AD)more
