Saxophone Summit brings back the days gone by of the hard bop wind battles as they could be heard decades ago. Put the top of the premier league of tenor saxophonists together and the result must be breathtaking. How could it be otherwise when Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano blast each other to the accompaniment of Phil Markowitz (piano), Cecil McBee (bass) and Billy Hart (drums). To
… keep things clear for the listener, Joe Lovano can be heard on the left, Dave Liebman in the middle and Michael Brecker on the right. Saxophone Summit first met in 1997 during Japan's Live By The Sea festival held in memory of John Coltrane. Due to its immense success, the wind section was inundated with requests to repeat this unique event, but since each of the gentlemen was weighed down by a crowded agenda, this could not happen immediately. It wasn't until 2003 that Saxophone Summit had time for a thirteen-concert tour. It is nice that such a rarity can now be heard in the warm shelter of the living room. (AD)more
