Michael Brecker can count himself among the most influential tenor saxophonists in the world. … Mike Mainieri in the fusion formation Steps Ahead. It took him no less than 1986 before he released Michael Brecker, the first of a series of highly acclaimed solo CDs. With Wide Angels he has delivered his greatest achievement to date. For this he wrote ten new compositions for his quindectet or 15-piece big band. They are not exactly the easiest work the man has ever written and vary between post-bop, latin jazz and tight funk. Wide Angels is a very impressive achievement and a welcome boost to the re-emergence of the big bands. (AD)more
