One of the tracks on this album is probably the shortest rap ever on a CD. Drummer Adam Deitch delivers a pithy tribute to his boss in a 19-second burst that ends with: 'Sco rocked for Miles and he's one of the best'. That says enough. John Scofield is one of the best jazz guitarists of the moment, a hard worker: constantly inventive and with an unmistakable sound and style. He gained fame in the
… Miles Davis band in the early eighties. Überjam is clearly a band album with a classic line-up: drums (Adam Deitch), bass (Jesse Murphy), rhythm guitar (Avi Bortnick) with 'Sco' on lead guitar. Organist John Medeski and sax and flute player Karl Denson provide a number of songs with extra color. Like so many of Miles Davis' fusion albums, Überjam is both cerebral and funky. The songs tend to be abstract and intellectual, but that is never at the expense of the groove. Überjam is an excellent album from an improviser who refuses to be predictable. (RM)more
