This 3-CD box covers only six months (September 1968-February 1969) of Miles Davis studio recordings. But this period was one of rapid change and development for him. It is a chronological account of the dissolution of the Shorter-Hancock-Carter-Williams quintet to the surprising sound of the Bitches Brew era. This box introduces Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and John
… McLaughlin to Davis's musical realms. And they all had an influence on Miles. It also meant the creation of the triple keyboard line-up (Herbie Hancock, Corea and Zawinul) in his music. The box contains the two well-known songs Frelon Brun and Mademoiselle Mabry, which were used to complete the album Filles De Kilimanjaro and the masterpiece In A Silent Way. Other material including the studio version of Directions was already released in the late 1970s but the box also contains three previously unreleased recordings: Splashdown, The Ghetto Walk and Early Minor. All of this work gives us a fascinating look at the musical development of Miles Davis during this period. And while it was a transitional period, the music he made back then was rich and fascinating. (RM)more
