Over the years, pianist, keyboard player and arranger Bob James has become more or less the symbol of lightweight crossover jazz. He mixes safe, funky rhythms with melodies and a little bit of improvisation. This CD "Joy ride" is no exception. Again, he uses good session musicians, who also accounted for the lion's share of the 12 songs. Singer Rasheeda can, just like on his previous album "Playin
… 'honkey", sing a sweet and sensual song ("Sweet talk me now"). This record does not seem intended for fans of challenging jazz, but it is certainly worthwhile as good background music. (RM) _more
