On previous albums Eric Bibb showed that the blues is an elastic concept for him. He recorded an album with in Africa ( ) and was inspired by gospel music on (2008). According to Bibb, Blues People is an ode to the bluestroubadours of yesteryear. The common thread on this album is the struggle that African Americans fought. From slave to fully-fledged citizen, a journey that, according to Bibb,
… is still incomplete. Just like his father, the folk singer and activist , Eric therefore actively opposes racism. The fifteen songs are a reminder of the past misery, such as the fate of the homeless musician in Driftin Door To Door. Also poignant is the song Rosewood, in which Bibb tells about a pogrom in which seven black Americans were murdered in 1923. With a rich list of guest artists ( , , and ) Eric Bibb delivers a more than inspired blues album. (PdK)more
