He has lost quite a few pounds and his mustache, but the blues never leaves Walter Trout. The blues called Trout this time in the form of faltering health. During the recording of this album it turned out that Trout badly needed a liver transplant. The major operation is now (May 2014) behind us, but the health problems cast their shadow ahead of The Blues Came Callin '. According to Trout himself,
… The Bottom Of The River is the key song on this record. The song is about a guy who is completely grounded, but still chooses life. That's the essence of the blues, according to Trout. Of course he knows how to find the right licks to sound his blues. A striking guest role is the British blues legend John Mayall who plays a boogie woogie on Mayall's Piano Boogie. Yet it is Trout who remains the master on his own record. With his howling Fender and warm, soulful voice, he interprets the blues like no other. (PdK)more
