After his time as a pop idol, with Doe Maar in the early eighties, singer / bassist Henny Vrienten retrained himself as a composer of soundtracks. In the meantime he has a considerable list of films (Left Luggage, Discovery Of Heaven) and television series (Dode Dichters Almanac, Klokhuis) to his name. At Night this craft and its pop past come together. This CD contains twelve songs with eleven
… well-known artists, with 'the night' as the theme. He then compiled this into an atmospheric suite, arranged cinematically and with a constantly slow tempo of seventy beats per minute. The songs ultimately stand or fall with the singing artist. For example, Def P does not get any further than rapping together some nightly clichés and Tom Barman and Henk Hofstede are audibly struggling with the Dutch language. It is mainly veteran singers such as Frank Boeijen, Thé Lau and Boudewijn de Groot who, with their nocturne musings, fit in nicely with Vrienten's ethereal arrangements. Music as company for sleepless nights. In addition to the CD, a DVD contains moody clips of all songs, made by Henk Hofstede. (MR)more
