An archaeological find that unfortunately adds little to the oeuvre of the great jazz pianist and composer . In 1959, Monk spent a day in a New York studio in the company of, among others, the French Nouvelle Vague film director Roger Vadim. The music was intended for his new film Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Due to circumstances, which are described in detail in the accompanying booklet of this CD,
… Monk did not have time to write new material. With his quintet he recorded a number of well-known own compositions such as Crepuscule With Nellie and Pannonica. The great thing about these recordings is that the enthusiast can almost imagine himself in the studio. The recordings sound unpolished and rough and we hear how the arrangement of Light Blue is created step by step. A beautiful photo book with images of that day completes a reconstruction. Indispensable for Monk fans. (MR)more
