The specialty of Israeli singer Yasmin Levy is singing in Ladino, the endangered language used by Sephardic (Spanish, Arab and Turkish) Jews for centuries. She keeps this tradition alive with her modern interpretation of Sephardic repertoire. At one point she felt the need to do something that was outside her comfort zone and had never done before. She went on a quest with her regular guitarist
… Yaron Hasson. Her husband Yishai came up with the suggestion of a tango album, conceived by the Spanish flamenco singer Diego el Cigala. Levy had listened to tango music from a young age, but she had never really studied it. Tango means passion, pain, sorrow and death. This theme and the accompanying melodramatics are entirely in keeping with Levy. The album Tango is a recording of a concert on June 3, 2013 in which Levy sang tango repertoire under orchestral accompaniment of the Netanya Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra. On both CD and DVD we hear and see Levy with a restrained but deeply felt passion interpret famous classics such as La Cumparsita, Por Una Cabeza and Vuelvo Al Sur. All praise to the fresh and atmospheric orchestral arrangements of conductor Yaron Gottfried! (SvdP)more
