Selma Meerbaum-Eisinger was sixteen years old when the Second World War broke out. She had grown up in Czernowitz, a city in what is now Ukraine that was occupied by the Nazis in 1940. Young Selma, who liked to write poetry in her spare time, was murdered in 1941. She left about fifty poems, which were smuggled out of the ghetto by a friend.
