It couldn't get much more gloomy than in Mahler's Sixth Symphony or Shostakovich's work, you might say. Yet the undersigned knows no more hopeless work than the piece that is central to this CD: 'Ich wandte mich und sah an alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der Sonne' by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. It is combined with two works from the two decades before, which provide a modest picture of the scope of
… Zimmermann's oeuvre. The performances are excellent, although the 'Ich wandte mich' is slightly less intense than an earlier (live) , and the blues rhythm (Zimmermann was a great jazz and blues fan!) that should sound in the last minutes I have not been able to detect. But otherwise it is in any case to be welcomed that these works have received new recordings by Zimmermann. Zimmermann is still one of the most expressive composers of the twentieth century, and his work is therefore also relatively accessible: for this reason alone, he always deserves the opportunity to become known to a larger audience.
