Ferdinand Bordewijk (1884-1965) was one of the most famous Dutch writers of his generation, next to Vestdijk. The novella Bint (1934) and the novel Karakter (1938) are classics of Dutch literature. The writer was also interested in music. would have been his favorite composer. He probably shared this preference with , the composer with whom the writer married in 1914. The husbands took great pleasure
… in evaluating each other's work. During the war they shared a certain cultural isolation, because neither wanted to join the Kultuurkamer. Bordewijk-Roepman's beautiful Sonata for piano from 1943 therefore sounded 'underground' during illegal house concerts. To make matters worse, their house was destroyed during the Allied bombing of the Bezuidenhout district of The Hague. All books, manuscripts and instruments were lost, and the couple barely found a safe haven. Unfortunately, Mrs. Bordewijk's oeuvre is currently not as well known as that of her writing husband. And that while she was performed a lot during her life. Hopefully this CD with songs and chamber music will change that. In addition to this CD, a double biography was also published in which Elly van der Kamp gives a portrait of the couple Bordewijk. (HJ)more
