Boundaries are crossed in art. Crossover is a normal phenomenon in 21st century music. However, no one will have seen the boundary crossing of this CD. Yet composer Thomas Jenkinson had a fascination for the (acoustic) organ from an early age. The cathedral organ in his hometown Chelmsford (Essex) was a lasting influence. Thomas Jenkinson, however, made a career out of popular electronic music under
… the pseudonym Squarepusher. At the Muziekweb office, he is assigned to IDM / Elektronica, the genre that has turned psychedelic dance into an intellectual listening experience. Anyway, this CD does show real organ music, composed by Tom Jenkinson (no pseudonym here) and played by on the organ of the Royal Festival Hall in London. This instrument is systematically explored in eight tracks. At least it seems that way when you read the super detailed registration instructions. There are no melodies. However, large sound surfaces, slowly moving chords and a lot of virtuoso finger work. (HJ)more
