Piet van der Steen has long been one of the most important organists in our country. As a concert organist he devoted himself to French Romantic organ music and its 20th-century followers (including , Jolivet, ). César Franck was the founder of this tradition. Franck's 12 major organ works (Six pièces, Trois pièces, Trois chorals) are therefore firmly anchored in the canon of classical music.
In addition to those 12 large pieces, we hear a number of smaller liturgical works, whether or not for harmonium. A highlight is the performance of the Cantabile (Trois pièces 2), the central canon of which is played with great intensity. The occasional mistakes in the difficult pedal solo of the Final are apparently forgiven by Piet van de Steen by the editors of Listen. At least, this magazine awarded this publication with a 10. 'This is a CD release that really adds something…', says Listen. (HJ)more
