In 1776 Mozart composed his First Piano Trio (KV.254). The piece is very similar to a piano sonata, to which the violin and cello have been loosely added. It was not until more than a decade later (1786, 1788) that he would contribute five more times to the genre. The Second Piano Trio (KV.496) has the longest playing time. However, this music is also relatively easy to play, as if Mozart intended
… it for the amateur market. It was only with the Piano Trios No. 3 & 4 (KV.502 & 542) that Mozart was able to make optimal use of the possibilities of the genre. Pianist Daniel Barenboim will play the six Piano Trios, flanked by son Michael (violin) and by Kian Soltani (cello). The company may miss the freshness of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. However, it is especially in the slow parts (such as in the beautiful Larghetto of No. 3) that there is heavenly music. 'I witnessed the wonderful interpretations of these three musicians (...) in 2019 during the Mozartwoche (...) the good taste, expression and fire of these artists fused into one taste, a single expression ...' recommendation of tenor Rolando Villazón for this release.
