Handel composed about 20 trio sonatas. A dozen of them were published in London in two different collections. This CD shows the six sonatas published in 1733 as op.2 (HWV 386-391). This release thus complements an earlier CD by Ayre EspaƱol with Handels Triosonatas op.5 (London, 1739, HWV 396-402). The subtitle of the new album - I vanni occulti - is taken from an aria from Handels oratorio Il
… trionfo del tempo e del disinganno (The triumph of time and disappointment). The aria warns against the transience of earthly goods: wealth creates the illusion that one can lull time to sleep. As is well known, Handel was constantly 'guilty' of recycling: his music is full of stealing, stolen from himself and others. And so the first sonata of the Trio Sonatas contains op. 2 material taken from the aforementioned oratorio. (HJ)more
