Fifty years after the creation of the six "Sonatas for violin and harpsichord" by Johann Sebastian Bach, his son Carl Philipp wrote about this music: "The six sonatas can be counted among Bach's first masterpieces in this category. They contain various slow movements, which are still unsurpassed because of their vocal style ". These six sonatas have been released on CD in a performance by Rachel
… Podger. This violinist received much appreciation for her renditions of Bach's "Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin". She is accompanied on the harpsichord by the famous baroque specialist Trevor Pinnock. Both the earliest and the latest version of the "Sonata Six" has been programmed (BWV.1019 & 1019a respectively). To make it even more complete, an alternative version of the "Cantabile" from "BWV.1019a" has been added. Besides these six "Sonatas for violin and obligatory harpsichord", Rachel Podger and Trevor Pinnock also play the "Sonatas for violin and basso continuo BWV.1021 & 1023. Gambist Jonathan Manson also contributed to this CD.more
