Hauer (1883-1959) 's business card read:' Einzige Kenner und Könner des Zwölftonssystems', thus directly touching on the most burning issue of his life. Just like Schönberg, Hauer had designed a composition system with twelve-tone sequences. Both gentlemen did not know that they had gone in the same direction, but in the end Schönberg took the credit and that has bothered Hauer all his life. On
… this CD the pianist Herbert Henck plays some of Hauer's twelve-tone works, such as the "Nachklangstudien op.16" and "Nomos op.19". Hauer's music bears little resemblance to that of Schönberg and is predominantly introverted in character, perhaps a little too much to ever gain popularity of any kind. That does not detract from the documentary value of this CD and Henck's good piano playing. (JvG) _more
