The Canto Ostinato is nationally and internationally the most popular Dutch contemporary composition ever. It is an example of minimal music, repetitive tonal music with minimal changes. Director Ramon Gieling even made a documentary about the Canto Ostinato (see DVD CAD0166) in which people tell why the Canto Ostinato affects them so much. The endlessly rippling melodic piano music works more on
… the senses than on the intellect; she creates a certain, somewhat melancholic state of mind in which the music that floats through time becomes part of the environment and creates a connection between the performer (s) and the audience. Ten Holt made Canto Ostinato for one or more keyboard instruments. The score consists of 106 cells that can be played and repeated completely randomly by the performer (s). The length can vary from at least half an hour to even two hours, as on this performance by the Piano Ensemble. After an organ version (clx4007) by Aart Bergwerff and a piano duo version (cax10710) by the couple Jeroen and Sandra van Veen, these musicians will play a version for three pianos and organ together with pianist Marcel Bergmann.
